Flatiron Building#

Plötzlich ragt ein einsamer Wolkenkratzer aus dem Häusergewirr. Flatiron Building nennt sich die kühne Konstruktion aus dem Jahr 1902, eines der ersten Hochhäuser der Stadt. Die ungewöhnliche Form ist verantwortlich für den Namen: Flatiron, d.h. Bügeleisen. Obwohl die New Yorker damals überzeugt waren, das 20-stöckige Gebäude würde den ersten Sturm nicht überstehen, entwickelte es sich zum Treffpunkt der Männerwelt. Die Luftströmungen am Fuß des Turms ließen nämlich die Röcke der Damen fliegen. Man musste eigens einen Polizisten engagieren, um die Gaffer zu vertreiben.

All of a sudden an exposed skyscraper soars from the clutter of houses. Flatiron Building is the name of the bold construction from 1902, one of the city's first skyscrapers - the unusual shape accounts for the name. Although the New Yorkers were convinced at the time that the 20-storey building would not weather the first storm, it became a meeting point for the male world: The wind currents at the foot of the tower let fly up the skirts of the ladies. A policeman had to be hired to clear the onlookers out.
