Obwohl der Strom der Einwanderer in den 1920er Jahren etwas schwächer wurde, blieb die Registrierungsstelle bis 1956 in Betrieb. Auch alle Flüchtlinge des 2. Weltkrieges mussten das Aufnahmeverfahren in Ellis Island durchlaufen, ausgenommen, sie brachten ein beträchtliches Vermögen mit - für die Wohlhabenden gab es eine Direktverbindung nach Manhattan.
Im Freigelände von Ellis Island erinnert die Immigrant Wall of Honor mit 700.000 eingravierten Namen von Einwanderern an diese bewegenden Zeiten. Für alle, die das rigorose Auswahlverfahren geschafft hatten, führte der Anblick von Manhattan wohl zu euphorischen Hochgefühlen. Selbst heute noch spürt man ein leichtes Kribbeln der Aufregung, wenn man sich der Skyline von der Meerseite her nähert.
In the 1920s the stream of immigrants was somewhat weaker, but the registraion office remained operating until 1956. All the refugees from World War II also had to go through the Ellis Island naturalization proceedings, except they brought with them a considerable fortune - for the wealthy there was a direct way to Manhattan. In the open-air area of Ellis Island, the Wall of Honor recalls these moving times with 700,000 engraved names of immigrants. For anyone who stood the rigorous selection process, the sight of Manhattan was likely to cause euphoric senses of delight. Even today you can still feel a slight tingle of excitement as you approach the skyline from the ocean side.
