New Orleans Bourbon Street#
Bourbon street was a premier residential area prior to 1900. The construction of the Storyville red-light district on Basin Street adjacent to the French Quarter, the area became known for prostitution and gambling. Jazz is said to have developed here. In the 1960s District Attorney Jim Garrison made a move to clean up Bourbon Street and began raiding adult entertainment establishments. He was successful and following his campaign Bourbon Street was populated by peep shows and sidewalk beer stands. The 1980s and 1990s were characterized by a "Disneyfication" of Bourbon Street in an effort to stimulate tourism.
