New Orleans 29.95,-90.066667 is the capital city of Louisiana, covers an area of 350 sq mi (900 sq km) and has a population of 384,320 (2010). The city is also a major United States port and is world-famous for its cuisine, music (birthplace of jazz) and its festivals and celebrations. In 2005 New Orleans was catastrophically struck by Hurricane Katrina which lead to 80% of the city being flooded because the Federal levee system failed. Although most residents had evacuated the city, tens of thousands were rescued afterwards and more than 1,500 people were recorded as dead in Louisiana, most of which in New Orleans.
