The Hollywood Sign 34.1341151,-118.3237369 is a landmark and cultural icon in Los Angeles, California. Situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains, the sign overlooks Hollywood. Originally created in 1923 the sign once read "Hollywoodland", but in 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began a contract with the City of Los Angeles Parks Department to repair and rebuild the sign and changed it to spell out "HOLLYWOOD" in 45-foot.tall (14 m) white capital letters. The sign was only designed to stand there for 18 months, so over the course of more than half of a century the sign sustained serious damage and deterioration. It was renovated several times, the last time in 2005.
