Quito#

The metropolis of Quito is built like an amphitheatre on the slopes of the Pichincha, a still active volcano. The town is located at 2850 m above sea level, making it the highest capital on the planet. After the Conquista of the inca empire by the Spaniards, the last Inca ruler fled to Quito. In order to leave nothing behind but ashes to the colonial rulers, he had the city burnt down. Soon after, the reconstruction of the city began and Quito became a colonial gem. Radiant white, the cathedral surmounts the Independence Square. Inside, the church shines in pure gold. Tons of the ornaments and cultic objects of the Inca civilization were melted down to build Christian altars.
Die Millionenmetropole Quito schmiegt sich wie ein Amphitheater an die Hänge des Pichincha, eines immer noch aktiven Vulkans. Sie liegt auf 2850 m Seehöhe und ist damit die höchstgelegene Hauptstadt der Erde. Nach der Eroberung des Inkareiches durch die Spanier floh der letzte Inka-Herrscher nach Quito. Um den Kolonialherren nichts als Asche zu hinterlassen, ließ er die Stadt niederbrennen. Bald darauf begann der Wiederaufbau und Quito wurde zur kolonialen Perle. Strahlendweiß überragt die Kathedrale den Platz der Unabhängigkeit. Im Inneren glänzt das Gotteshaus in purem Gold. Tonnenweise hat man die Schmuck- und Kultgegenstände der Inka eingeschmolzen, um daraus christliche Altäre zu formen.
