The discovery of the natural wonder was reserved for the English missionary and explorer David Livingstone. The bold adventurer had already explored the interior of Africa for 14 years, before he, in 1855, stood in front of the rushing water masses as the first white man. In honour of his Queen he named them "Victoria Falls". Livingstone, long celebrated as a national hero in Britain, always returned to Africa and explored - on his search for the sources of the Nile, unsuccessful in the end - the remotest areas of the Dark Continent. Weakened by malaria and dysentery he finally died at the age of 60 in the jungle of Zambia.
