Nearby Masvingos is the cultural heart of Zimbabwe, a sublime ruin site, one would never suspect in sub-Saharan Africa. Great Zimbabwe was the center of a medieval high civilization, which found its expresssion in the construction of a city layout of 1 km², a mighty Royal Palace in its center. In the 12th century suddenly a highly organized society established itself that united the interests of several Shona ethnic groups under a large kingdom. The control over the gold and ivory trade as well as intensive agriculture and cattle farming strengthened the power of its kings. The frontiers stretched out to Botswana and Mozambique. Great Zimbabwe, in the 14th and 15th centuries at the height of its power, became a dazzling city where 18,000 people lived.
In der Nähe Masvingos liegt das kulturelle Herz Simbabwes, eine grandiose Ruinenstätte, die man in Schwarzafrika niemals vermuten würde. Great Simbabwe war das Zentrum einer mittelalterlichen Hochkultur, die sich im Bau einer fast 1 km² großen Stadtanlage mit mächtigem Königspalast im Zentrum niederschlug. Im 12. Jahrhundert etablierte sich plötzlich eine straff organisierte Gesellschaft, die die Interessen mehrerer Shona-Volksgruppen unter einem großen Reich vereinte. Die Kontrolle über den Gold- und Elfenbeinhandel sowie intensive Landwirtschaft und Rinderzucht stärkten die Macht der Könige. Die Reichsgrenzen dehnten sich bis Botswana und Mosambique aus. Great Simbabwe, im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert am Höhepunkt seiner Macht, wurde zur glanzvollen Stadt, in der 18.000 Menschen wohnten.
