Most tourists reach the top of Table Mountain by gondola -33.953303, 18.40325 . However, there others who are more sportsmanlike and hike to the top. In 1926 construction of a cablecar started and was finished in 1929. The cablecar was upgraded in 1997 by introducing new cars with higher capacities, from originally 25 to 65 passengers. New cars run on a double cable, making them much more stable in high wind and further increasing the speed of the ascent, thus shortening the journey to 4-5 minutes. During a ride to the top of the mountain the floor of the so-called "Rotair" cars rotates through 360 degrees, giving passengers view in all directions, indpendent where they stand in teh cabin. The upper cable station offers views overlooking Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south.
