The Phaethontidae consist of only three closely related species. The White-tailed Tropic Bird is particularly elegant with its 50 cm long feathers, which play an important role in the display flight. The animals spend most of their lives in the air. Only for breeding they come ashore, mostly to remote islands or inaccessible parts of the coast, where there is no danger of land-based predators.
Nur drei eng verwandte Arten umfasst die Gattung der Tropikvögel. Besonders elegant präsentiert der Weisschwanz-Tropikvogel seine 50 cm langen Federn, die beim Balzflug eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Tiere verbringen die meiste Zeit ihres Lebens in der Luft. Nur zum Brüten kommen sie an Land, meist auf entlegene Inseln oder unzugängliche Küstenabschnitte, wo keine Gefahr durch Landraubtiere droht.
