Creoles are the descendants of colonial slaves in Africa and America. They form multifaceted culturally and ethnically mixed societies. 95% of the the Seychelles' population are Creoles and they still influenced by African ideas. On all the islands you can find so-called 'Totons', healers, who also know the mysteries of the Voodoo cult. Most families are matriarchally organized. The mother 'wears the breeches' and is responsible for the children while the fathers vary. Usually only the mother knows who is the father of the respective child. For a man it is normal to marry not only the chosen woman but also a group of children - usually from different fathers. It is therefore not surprising that in the Seychelles almost half of the children are born out of wedlock.
