On the west coast of Praslin, the Black Pearl Farm informs about the culture of black pearls. How the precious jewel in the shell is created is still not fully understood. The shells of the pearl oysters consist of mother-of-pearl, a bio-mineral composed of lime and organic material. If a foreign object, for example a grain of sand or a parasite, gets into the oyster, it is isolated by a layer of mother-of-pearl. After a few years, in which more and more layers of mother-of-pearl have enclosed the foreign object, a considerable pearl has been formed. Cultured pearls are formed in this way, too, but not at random, the foreign object gets there with the help of a surgical intervention.
