Inaccessible to non-Muslims, the Kairaouine Mosque and Madrassa Complex in the heart of the Old Town is home to the oldest university of Islam, second to the University of Cairo. Founded in 859 and ever since expanded, the complex sits 22,000 believers. At the time of the Marinid dynasty the madrassa was attended by 8000 students, whose education took up to 30 years.
Der für Nichtmuslime unzugängliche Kairaouine Moschee- und Medresenkomplex im Herz der Altstadt beherbergt die neben der Universität von Kairo älteste Hochschule des Islam. Gegründet im Jahre 859 und seither stets erweitert, fasst die Anlage 22.000 Gläubige. Zur Zeit der Meriniden wurde die Kairaouine von 8000 Studenten besucht, deren Ausbildung bis zu 30 Jahren dauerte.
