The state and the church have always formed an inseparable unity in Islam - in Morocco, too. The king is the highest political and religious official. In this capacity, King Hassan II felt inspired to build a mosque on the waters ad gloriam of Allah, where the faithful can 'contemplate the heaven and the ocean of God and yet remain on solid ground'. The result is one of the world's largest mosques, which sits more than 100,000 worshippers, the city's oversized landmark. According to the plans of a French architect, the splendid complex stands right beside the sea on an earthquake-proof artificial platform since 1993. The dimensions are downright intimidating: From the 210 m high minaret a laser beam points towards Mecca. The top is crowned by three golden globes of just under 4 tons. A gigantic sliding roof, 100 m long and weighing 1000 tons, can be opened on demand. Then, nothing terrestrial impedes the refuge into the heaven of Allah.
