Unlike the rather fair-skinned inhabitants of the northern highlands of Ethiopia, the southern peoples are characterized by a much darker skin colour. The term 'Ethiopia' comes from the Greek and means 'man with burnt face'. Even in antiquity the country was regarded as the synonym for 'Black Africa'.
