Recent excavations in the adjacent palace district indicate that it dates back to the first millennium BC. At that time, immigrants from the Yemeni Marib presumably have founded the independent kingdom of Di'amat, the predecessor of the Axumite Empire.
Neue Grabungen im angrenzenden Palastbezirk weisen bis in das erste Jahrtausend v.d.Z. zurück. Damals sollen Einwanderer aus dem jemenitischen Marib hier das unabhängige Königreich Di´amat gegründet haben, den Vorläufer der axumitischen Epoche.
