The Sidama people are with 3 million members the fifth-largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. As is common in Africa, the families live in circular huts made of wood, clay and straw. Sometimes the buildings are entirely woven from plants, like on this picture. The windowless building is entered through a low door. People and animals live together in the tightest of spaces. Here they sleep and they cook on an open hearth. The ascending smoke also protects the thatched roof from insects so that the huts can reach a durability of 30 years.
Das Volk der Sidama bildet mit 3 Mio. Mitgliedern die fünftgrößte ethnische Gruppe in Äthiopien. Die Familien leben - wie in Afrika üblich - in Rundhütten aus Holz, Lehm und Stroh. Manchmal sind die Bauwerke wie hier zur Gänze aus Pflanzen geflochten. Man betritt das fensterlose Gebäude durch eine niedrige Tür. Innen leben Menschen und Tiere auf engstem Raum zusammen. Dort wird geschlafen und mit offener Feuerstelle gekocht. Der aufsteigende Rauch schützt zudem das Strohdach vor Insekten, sodass die Hütten eine Lebensdauer von 30 Jahren erreichen.
