The frescoes show saints, Stars of David, sun disks and double-headed eagles in Byzantine style. Red and white stripes are reminiscent of oriental patterns. In the middle of the main aisle stands a pillar mantled in cloths and without any static function. According to King Lalibela's dream, God had touched the rock at this point. Therefore, it remained standing and no human eye ever should see it. According to another legend, even the future of the world is engraved behind the cloths.
Die Verzierungen zeigen Heilige, Davidsterne, Sonnenscheiben und Doppeladler in byzantinischer Darstellungsart. Rot-weiße Streifen erinnern an orientalische Vorbilder. Mitten im Hauptschiff steht ein mit Stoff verhüllter Pfeiler ohne statische Funktion. Gott habe, so berichtet König Lalibela von seinem Traum, an dieser Stelle den Felsen berührt. Daher blieb er stehen und kein menschliches Auge darf ihn je sehen. Eine andere Legende berichtet, hinter den Tüchern sei gar die Zukunft des Weltgeschehens eingraviert.
