The coast of the Red Sea was one of the earliest regions of Islamic proselytizing. The followers of Mohammed came to Ethiopia as refugees already during the lifetime of the Prophet. The Islamification of the coastal areas had dramatic consequences for the Christian hinterland. It led to the fall of the Axumite empire which was was suddenly cut off from all important trade routes. Nevertheless, Christianity remained the dominant religion in the country. Islam, the confession of about a third of the Ethiopians, dominates the eastern regions around Dire Dawa and Harar. The route there leads along a good asphalt road through a varied landscape.
Die Küste des Roten Meeres gehörte zu den frühesten Regionen islamischer Missionierung. Die Anhänger Mohammeds kamen noch zu Lebzeiten des Propheten als Flüchtlinge nach Äthiopien. Die Islamisierung der Küstengebiete hatte für das christliche Hinterland dramatische Folgen. Sie führte zum Untergang des axumitischen Großreiches, weil es plötzlich von allen wichtigen Handelswegen abgeschnitten war. Trotzdem blieb das Christentum die beherrschende Religion im Land. Der Islam, zu dem sich etwa ein Drittel der Äthiopier bekennt, dominiert in den östlichen Regionen rund um Dire Dawa und Harar. Der Weg dorthin führt entlang einer guten Asphaltstrasse durch eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft.
