Atuona on Hiva Oa #

Hiva Oa is the second largest island in the Marquesas Islands (320 square kilometres) and the largest island of the southern Marquesas group. It is only 4 kilometers north of Tahuatu. Around 2,200 people live on the island. The volcano Temetiu is Hiva Oa's highest point with 1,200 metres.

Atuona is the final home of French painter Paul Gauguin (see also report on Tahiti) and Belgian singer Jacques Brel, both of whom are buried here.
