The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) in Florence is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Construction began in 1294 and consecration took place in 1442.

Many of its 16 chapels are decorated with frescos by Giotto and his students. The basilica is the burial place of Galileo, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, and other famous Italian figures.
