In 1615, the Elector Lothar von Metternich began to construct a Rococo-style palace in Trier; Archbishop Johann Philipp von Walderdorff completed the structure in 1756.

Today the palace - considered to be one of the most impressive Rococo buildings in the world - houses the Trier city government offices.
