City Hall of Perpignan#
The city hall is directly adjacent to the House of Trades. Here, French Falgs dominate, yet even here the Catalonian flag (yellow/red) is shown.
Looking into the the courtyard a sculpture "Venus" can be seen. It was done by Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol (December 8, 1861 – September 27, 1944). He was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker who was born in Banyuls-sur-mer, a small fishing village south of Perpignan, very close to the Spanish border.
Indeed his mother tongue was Catalonian.
Although he lived (usually in winter) in Paris he had a shop near Perpignan, spent most summer in his hometown Banyuls-sur-mer and married one of his employees, Clotilde Narcis, when he was 35.
She became his favorite model, and one can meet many sculptures showing her in Perpignan, but since Maillol's fame spread also elsewhere.
