The last half an hour leg of the trip to the crater rim leads through a narrow gorge. Shortly after the last volcanic eruption the landscape looked completely different as it was a desolate and monotonous ash desert. Today jungle-like vegetation grows on the fertile soils. Even natural tree ferns found a habitat here.
Die letzte halbe Stunde bis zum Kraterrand führt durch eine enge Schlucht, die früher ein völlig anderes Bild bot. Damals unmittelbar nach dem Ausbruch des Pinatubo war sie eine öde und eintönige Aschewüste. Heute hat sich am fruchtbaren Boden eine dschungelartige Vegetation angesiedelt, die sogar urwüchsigen Baumfarnen einen Lebensraum bietet.
