The Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, deeded in 1688 the fertile area around Franschhoek Franschhoek, Westkap, Südafrika ("French Corner") to two-hundred Huguenot families, fleeing from France because of religious persecution.

At the town entrance a Huguenot memorial was built in 1938, commemorating the eviction from Europe. Nearby a museum chronicles the history of the first settlers.
