Sometimes you hear the remark that Swakopmund Swakopmund, Erongo, Namibia has the biggest beach in the world. In a certain sense this is true: the Namib Desert reaches up to the sea and is 1.500 km long and extends 150 km into the country. The reason why no rain is falling close to the sea is the extremely cold Benguela ocean current following the African shoreline from south to north: the rain falls over the cold water and not over the warm land. Fog is the only regular water supply for the land, reaching 50km deep into the desert, even though it lasts only up to midday.
