The island is 150 km off the coast of China, lying on the west wall of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Philippine tectonic plate slides under the Eurasian one and thereby unfolds mountain ranges and volcanoes. Meanwhile, all the volcanoes are extinct in Taiwan, but the tectonic zone still becomes noticable repeatedly by earthquakes.
