Sie kauften die Stadt samt Umland für 100 000 Dukaten dem ungarischen König ab und machten sie zur bedeutendsten Handelsmetropole Dalmatiens. Mit Zerschlagung der Republik Venedig durch Napoleon geriet die Stadt bis 1918 unter österreichische Herrschaft.
