Mareeba Mareeba, Australia is 400 m above sea level on the confluence of the Barron River, Granite Creek and Emerald Creek. The town's name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning meeting of the waters. It has a population of about 7.000, but during the two week Mareeba rodeo (usually beginning of July) almost 14.000 tourists visit!

Numerous crops are grown near Mareeba including avocados, mangoes, lychees, longans, sugar cane, cashews, macadamias, bananas, pineapples, tea tree oil, coffee, and a variety of vegetables and tropical fruits.

Tobacco was once important, too, but is not grown any more.
