The most important church is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, completed in 1125. Inside, one is almost overwhelmed by the fresco cycle. It follows the Byzantine school and shows well how ecclesiastical art should cement the irrefutable order of the state and social system back then. Jesus as sole ruler in the dome with the angels as adjutants reflected the state hierarchy with the emperor at the top. This 'program' was burned into people's minds through religion. Today, one has to admit that it was perfect marketing, even if it was not a new invention: Rulers in almost all high cultures around the world have always understood how to divinely legitimize their power. The close connection between state and religion is well suited to weld together and manipulate large groups of people and to justify all the acts of the rulers. Dictators and supreme representatives of a faith have always had a great common ally, namely fear, and a great common enemy: doubt.
