Die Geschichte des Platzes ist jedoch weniger ruhmreich. Einst lag hier der Armenfriedhof und die öffentliche Hinrichtungsstätte von New York. Auch heute noch liegen über 20.000 Leichen unter dem Park begraben. Darüber herrscht ein buntes Treiben - eine Oase der Entspannung, meilenweit entfernt von der Hektik New Yorks.
A few steps further, the street opens to Washington Square Washington Square, New York . The A triumphal arch provides the entrance which praises the deeds of the first president. But the history of the square is less glorious. Once upon a time the pauiper's field and the public execution site of New York lay here. Even today, more than 20,000 corpses are still buried under the park. Above them, there is an oasis of relaxation, miles away from the hustle and bustle of New York.
