Spanish conquistadors, led by Pedro de Valdivia, advanced for the first time in history at the beginning of 1552 into the area of nowadays Puerto Montt. A permanent colonisation was not possible as the indigenous population strongly defended against the invaders. A settlement of the native people was located in the present city area at the beginning of the 17th century.

Since 1848 German immigrants settled there. A settlement, called Melipulli ('Four hills') was founded, in the then common checkerboard pattern (square blocks surrounded by streets). Eight years later the settlement was declared a city and renamed Puerto Montt, in honour of the president Manuel Montt Torres. The city developed well and in 1885 counted 3.480 inhabitants, many of them Germans.

On May 22nd 1960 the city suffered a severe setback, as it was heavily damaged by an earthquake.
